5 LIQUID LIPSTICKS TO TRY THIS FALL

If you know me in real life, you know I love lipstick! I’m also a huge design and colour nerd, and have always approached makeup as an art form (hey — I did go to art college, after all!). This autumn, I’ve been feeling extra inspired by the Fall 2016 PANTONE Fashion Trend Report — if you’ve been following along, you’ll have heard me mention it in my September Beauty Favourites, my first Autumn 2016 Trend Guide, as well as my latest recipe. Colour is something that has always spanned categories in my creative work and it also spans categories here at JustineCelina. Today, autumn colour trends are spilling into my beauty space as I share this comprehensive guide, covering everything you need to know about liquid lipstick this season!

5 Liquid Lipsticks to Try the Fall combines my love of liquid lipstick with seasonal colour trends — I’ve matched my favourite liquid lipstick formulas up to 6 shades from the Fall 2016 PANTONE Fashion Trend Report. I’m thrilled to be bringing this post to you in partnership with Sephora Canada — where you’ll find each one of these lipsticks, along with a list of alternatives (girl, I’ve totally got you covered!). Grab a latte or pour yourself a glass of wine and let’s chat about this season’s hottest liquid lipsticks — including formula overviews, colour trends and limited edition liquid lipstick sets for Holiday 2016!

LIQUID LIPSTICK INTRODUCTION & APPLICATION TIPS

Who’s ready to learn all about liquid lipstick? Let’s start at the beginning and chat about how to properly use and apply liquid lipstick to achieve the best result. Whether you’re new to the world of liquid lipstick or are a liquid lip veteran, these are my tips for a fail-proof application and ensuring longest wear time possible!

Lip prep before liquid lipstick application | How to apply liquid lipstick // JustineCelina.com

First, since liquid lipsticks are, well… liquid, they can settle and separate in the packaging. Before use, always give your lipstick a good shake to ensure the formula is ready to use. The second most important part of getting the most out of your liquid lipstick is prepping your lips accordingly. Liquid lipsticks can tend to be drying (although the shades I’m highlighting today are the most comfortable I’ve come across), so using a good lip moisturizer before and after application is essential. My personal favourites are the Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask or the C.O. Bigelow My Favorite Night Balm.

Before I begin my beauty routine, I always slather on a thick layer of lip moisturizer. This allows my lips to become fully hydrated before I apply my liquid lipstick at the end of my makeup application. I begin with my base makeup, move on to powders, then work on my brows and eyes — I leave the lips for last to ensure the moisturizer has a chance to go to work. When I’m ready to apply my lipstick, I remove the balm (along with any foundation or powder that has fallen onto my lips) with a q-tip to ensure my lips are clean, dry and slightly exfoliated before application. Then, I go straight in with my liquid lipstick — outlining the edge of my lips with the slanted part of the applicator (like I would a lipliner) before completely filling my lips in with the flat side of the applicator to achieve even coverage.

Fall 2016 Pantone Fashion Trend Report

Today, I’ve selected 6 shades from the Fall 2016 PANTONE Fashion Trend Report and matched them to my favourite liquid lipstick formulas at Sephora Canada. We’ve got everything from brick reds, burnt oranges, neutral rosy hues, brightened berries and greige shades — there really is an entire spectrum of colour to be inspired by this season. I’m excited to share how these gorgeous shades translate to the lips!

WHY I LOVE THE LIQUID LIPSTICK TREND

5 Liquid Lipsticks to Try this Fall // JustineCelina.com

Liquid lipsticks have been popular for a few years now, but within the last year they’ve completely exploded in the beauty industry — almost every company has their own liquid lipstick range! I’ve tried so many different shades and formulas over the years and have always wanted to create a comprehensive guide of high end favourites to share with you — so that’s exactly what I’ve done today! 5 Liquid Lipsticks to Try This Fall gives you all the details on autumn’s 2016 trendiest shades in my all-time-favourite liquid lipstick formulas.

One of the main reasons I love liquid lipsticks is that they’re really just paint for the lips! I’m constantly mixing up my own concoctions if I can’t find the exact shade I’m looking for. It’s a flexible medium that really encourages you to get creative and create your own lip cocktails! I hope this post inspires you to have some fun with lip colour this fall and approach your beauty routine with an artistic eye. Remember: it’s just makeup — it washes off at the end of the day, so why not have a little fun and experiment?

5 LIQUID LIPSTICKS TO TRY THIS FALL

Smashbox Always On Matte Liquid Lipstick in Out Loud

C $28.00 (0.13 oz)

Smashbox Always On Matte Liquid Lipstick in Out Loud Photos, Review, Swatches // JustineCelina.com

PANTONE 18-1340 Potters Clay

Let’s kick this thing off with a bang and talk about what is undoubtedly autumn 2016’s most coveted liquid lipstick! I went to great lengths to track the Smashbox Always On Matte Liquid Lipstick in Out Loud down for this post (it’s currently sold out online — but don’t worry, it will be back soon!) because I simply had to share with you. It’s one of the most unique lipsticks I’ve ever worn and I have absolutely nothing like it in my collection. The Smashbox Always On Matte Liquid Lipstick in Out Loud is a dead on colour match for PANTONE 18-1340 Potter’s Clay and Smashbox describes it as deep orange’. Rust, terracotta, and burnt oranges are a huge colour trend this year in fashion, beauty and design. I think they’re interesting shades with a cool, 70’s vibe (another trend I’m happy isn’t going anywhere!) that translate well to the lips. If you’re looking for the liquid lipstick of the season — look no further than the Smashbox Always On Matte Liquid Lipstick in Out Loud!

Although I can’t sing Out Loud‘s unique praises enough, I did manage to find some alternatives for you in the terracotta, rust and orange families until Out Loud becomes available. Kat Von D’s Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Double Dare is lighter and more pink, while Smashbox’s Always On Matte Liquid Lipstick in Driver’s Seat is similar to Double Dare but just a bit brighter. The Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick in Spicy is a bright red orange.

Smashbox has knocked these Always On Matte Liquid Lipsticks out of the park. This is the most luxurious formula of the bunch — scentless, thick, and nourishing. It glides over the lips and even fills in lip lines — probably due to the lip-smoothing primer oil complex infused into this formula. The pointed applicator ensures precise application and features a reservoir that collects product to ensure you have enough lipstick to completely cover your lips in one swipe. These liquid lipsticks remain slightly tacky for the first hour of wear and aren’t totally transfer proof, but they’re extremely comfortable, lightly hydrating and suede-like on the lips. The Smashbox Always On Matte Liquid Lipsticks last for about 7 hours on me.

Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Lolita

C $24.00 (0.22 oz)

Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Lolita Photos, Review, Swatches // JustineCelina.com

Pantone 18-163 Dusty Cedar

Lolita is a cult classic for a reason. This neutral, marsala shade looks beautiful (and very different) on almost every skintone. It’s a perfect colour match for PANTONE 18-1630 Dusty Cedar, which is described as an autumn version of spring pinks — a dusty, rose-toned pink with complexity that exudes warmth and welcome. I’ve mentioned marsala many times here at JustineCelina and some of you may recall that it was PANTONE’s Colour of the Year for 2015 (I even published a 6 Marsala Lipsticks to Try this Fall post last year!). The Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Lolita is a versatile shade, described by the brand as a ‘chestnut rose’. I love it because it coordinates well with autumnal makeup and the earthtones of the season — it’s my go-to shade when I’m craving something neutral and sophisticated. Looking for alternatives? The Anastastia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick in Ashton is browner, while the SEPHORA COLLECTION Cream Lip Stain in 13 Marvelous Mauve is slightly, well… more mauve. And if the original Lolita is a little bit to dark for you, give her brighter, warmer alter ego, Lolita II a try — it’s a terracotta nude.

Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Lolita Photos, Review, Swatches // JustineCelina.com

The Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks are a unique liquid lipstick formula and unlike any of the others I’ll be chatting about today. It’s thin (but not too thin), spreads easily and dries quickly — so you have to work fast! It dries down almost immediately to a completely smooth, matte, transfer-proof finish and feels weightless on the lips. I find most liquid lipstick formulas that are this thin to be drying on the lips, but Kat Von D has infused these lipsticks with hydrating vitamin E and sunflower seed oil to keep them from drying your lips as they wear. These liquid lipsticks layer well (she even suggests applying the first layer, waiting for it to dry, then applying a second coat for a more intense, long wearing effect) and they’re easy to touch up. They last for about 7 hours on me.

Sephora Collection Cream Lip Stain in 12 African Violet

C $18.00 (0.17 oz)

Sephora Collection Cream Lip Stain in 12 African Violet Photos, Review, Swatches // JustineCelina.com

PANTONE 17-3240 Bodacious

The wildcard of the bunch goes to the Sephora Collection Cream Lip Stain in 12 African Violet, which is a great match for PANTONE 17-3240 Bodacious. Move over traditional berries — autumn 2016’s berry-inspired shades are lighter, brighter and more pink based. Personally, I’m a huge fan of these types of shades and have featured them in favourites and reviews many times here at JustineCelina. I love their ability to bring so much life to the complexion in cooler temperatures, and they look especially beautiful on my fellow green-eyed ladies! This brightened berry shade is a bit unexpected for autumn and lends itself well to vibrant colour combinations — but it can also punch up a neutral or monochromatic outfit. Is African Violet a little to bright for you? Kat Von D’s Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Lovesick is a more muted version of African Violet, while Susperia is a darker, more purple version.

With the plethora of brands available at Sephora, their own range of products — SEPHORA COLLECTION — is often overlooked. The SEPHORA COLLECTION Cream Lip Stains are reason enough to give the line a look, combining the best value of any liquid lip I’ll be mentioning today with an incredible formula. Each of the Sephora Collection Lip Creams I’ve tried offer fantastic pigmentation and an airy, whipped formula that completely dries down on the lips and leaves a satin-mate, transfer-proof finish. They also have a pleasant, sweet scent and are infused with avocado oil so they remain comfortable throughout 7 hours they wear on me. They really are the best of all worlds and I’ll be chatting about more about this range in upcoming beauty content this year!

If you’re looking to sample a few shades from this range, the limited edition SEPHORA COLLECTION Mini Cream Lip Stain Set (C $15) for holiday 2016 is a great opportunity to do so — offering 4 x 0.04 oz Mini Cream Lip Stains in Always Red (review), Infinite Rose, Cherry Blossom, Blackberry Sorbet.

Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Nahz Fur Atoo

C $24.00 (0.22 oz)

PANTONE 18-1550 Aurora Red

Craving some drama this fall? Enter Kat Von D’s Everlasting Liquid Lipstick Nahz Fur Atoo — which is described as a blood crimson. It’s a rich, brick red shade with tons of underlying warmth and it’s a perfect interpretation of PANTONE 18-1550 Aurora Red. Reds are another huge colour trend in creative industries for autumn 2016 and an obvious choice for shades that translate well to the lips (I also mentioned this in my September Beauty Favourites post). I’m a huge fan of dramatic red lips this season and always receive so many compliments and questions when I wear Nahz Fur Atoo — it’s a truly stunning, sensual shade that exudes confidence. I’m wearing it in my Autumn 2016 Trend Guide | New Romantic if you’d like to see it in action! If you’re looking for an alternate shade with even more drama, try the Smashbox Always On Matte Liquid Lipstick in Disorderly which is a deeper, browner brick red.

The Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks have been a long time favourite of mine and I own many shades from the range — all of which are incredible. If you’re looking to sample a range of liquid lipsticks from Kat Von D, pick up the limited edition Everlasting Mini Liquid Lipstick Set (C $62). It offers 8 x 0.1 oz/ 3 mL Mini Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks in 6 on-trend, permanent shades in Santa Sangre (a poison apple), Mother (a dusty mauve pink, and another of my favourite shades), Lovesick (a mauve nude, and another favourite), Backstage Bambi (a vivid hot pink), L.U.V. (a rich violet) and Echo (a satin navy blue), as well as 2 brand new shades which are exclusive to the set, including Roxy (a bright grape) and Plath (a deep russet red). It would also make a fantastic gift for the beauty lovers in your life this holiday season!

Anastastia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick in Sepia

C $26.00 (0.11 oz)

Anastastia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick in Sepia Photos, Review, Swatches // JustineCelina.com

Pantone Warm Taupe, Sharkskin

And last but not least is my selection for those of you searching for something totally outside the box! If you haven’t jumped onto the greige lip train that’s been popular for a couple of seasons, test the waters with the Anastastia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick in Sepia. It’s a deep, greyed taupe and the perfect medley of PANTONE 16-1318 Warm Taupe and 17-3914 Sharkskin shades. With both grey and tan being such huge colour trends this year, why not take the neutral craze one step further and translate it to the lips? These type of shades are edgy, sophisticated and sexy — I always receive compliments when I wear them. If you’re not sure you can pull these types of shades off, I encourage you to give them a try — you might be surprised. I love the mysterious, cool vibe they add to my look in the fall. If Sepia is a little too grey for you, try Anastastia’s Veronica, which a browner and slightly more purple version of Sepia, described by the brand as a taupe mauve.

The Anastastia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipsticks are thicker, more mousy formula with no scent. They dry down to a velvety matte finish and are totally transfer proof — they’re most similar in formula to the SEPHORA COLLECTION Lip Cream Stains I mentioned earlier. They remain comfortable on the lips while they wear and just like all the other formulas I mentioned today they last for about 7 hours on me.

Note: Keep in mind that these shades will look different on different skintones. For reference, I’m a MAC NC 25 – 30.
