With Autumn Equinox behind us and my favourite month of the year coming to a close, I’m back today with a bonus, 6 outfit, Transitional Summer to Fall 2019 Lookbook! If you’ve been following along with my style content this year, you’ll know I committed to producing one, 12 outfit seasonal LOOKBOOK here at JustineCelina in 2019. That said, since fall (and this gorgeous month when summer turns to fall!) is the season I feel most inspired FASHION wise, I created this mini transitional lookbook to celebrate the sartorial nuances I adore when blending the best of both seasons!

It’s the magical time of year when we can wear boots with bare legs, espadrilles with chunky knits, felt hats with chiffon, embroidery with corduroy and velvet with florals — and I’m fully embracing it! If you’re ready for a healthy dose of fall fashion and seasonal colour trends but not quite ready to retire your favourite summer pieces, you’ve come to the right place! My Transitional Summer to Fall 2019 Lookbook features everything I’ve been wearing in both personal and professional settings this month — complete with tons of transitional styling advice and shoppable links at every price point, set against a gorgeous backdrop of our changing inner-city Calgary landscape.

SMOKED PEACH MAPLE BOURBON SMASH

Craft cocktail lovers, I’m back today with fall’s first libation in celebration of Autumn Equinox! If you frequent my FOOD or COCKTAIL sections, you’ll know that my most inspired creations are born out of making use of what we have on hand to yield unexpected combinations — and that’s exactly how this recipe came together. Late August is when our annual case of Okanagan peaches arrives and every year I end up going into peach recipe overdrive, while simultaneously eating my body weight in peaches. I’ve explored peaches in smoothies, sangrias and crumbles (that recipe will have to wait until next summer), but this year I had an itch to experiment with my favourite summer stone fruit in a proper cocktail. We’d been grilling up a storm for dinner one Friday evening and Adam had some delicious Smoked Maple Bourbon kicking around — and voila, my Smoked Peach Maple Bourbon Smash came to life right there on our patio!

This summer-meets-autumn sip juxtaposes the essence of juicy late summer fruit with a smoky grilled edge, infused with spicy autumnal warmth to create the ultimate transitional cocktail that’s equal parts sweet ‘n spicy. If you still haven’t had your fill of late summer peaches, get your grill on and imbibe this simple but sassy cocktail sure to impress both bourbon lovers and bourbon skeptics (believe it or not, I was the latter prior to this cocktail!). As always, my Smoked Peach Maple Bourbon Smash is free of dairy, gluten and refined sugar — and brimming with better-for-you ingredients, because I believe in balance in all areas of life. Grilled Okanagan peaches, Smoked Maple Bourbon, 100% pure Canadian maple syrup, fresh thyme, spicy ginger beer, fresh lemon juice, a splash of soda water and a dash of bitters are shaken to perfection and served over ice in this quintessentially September libation!

PATTERN PLAY | POLKA DOTS

I’m so thrilled to bring you fresh installment in my PATTERN PLAY series as we transition into autumn, featuring a print I didn’t think you’d ever see me wear here at JustineCelina — Polka Dots! If you’re into FASHION  you’re probably used to seeing spots in various garments, and at a wide variety of retailers, over the past couple of years. In stark contrast to the last post in this series dedicated to chain print (which I’ve worn and loved for the better part of a decade!), Polka Dots are a very new addition to my wardrobe — but one I’m happy to welcome into my closet! Isn’t it funny how your tastes change and you find yourself wearing things you initially didn’t think were for you? Today I’m embracing my style evolution with PATTERN PLAY | Polka Dots — a comprehensive guide on how to make one of 2019 / 2020’s key prints work for you in any season!

Although I consider Polka Dot to be a classic print, it took me awhile to find a piece that didn’t feel too was too sweet or traditional for me. I felt that polka dotted pieces in more basic colours (like black and white) just didn’t suit my personal style, because they felt too rigid and formal. But as I’ve mentioned many times in this series, I’m a firm believer that if you’re intrigued by a print, there’s a way to make it work for you — incorporating it into your personal style in a way that compliments your lifestyle, preferences, figure and budget. So when I spotted this darling Pantone Sugar Almond (I’m already drawing inspiration from the AW19/20 Fashion Colour Trend Report!) coloured wrap dress, I instantly fell for the unique colour and larger scale of the print. If you’re intrigued by Polka Dots but not sure how to wear them, you’ve come to the right place — I’m sharing my best tips and tricks for finding the right pattern for your body type, how to style spots into 2020 and shoppable links for my favourite polka dotted pieces at every price point!

With the promise of changing leaves dancing on the late-summer breeze, I’m back with a fresh instalment of DIGITAL BLOOMS to welcome my favourite month of the year! I love September because it combines the best of summer and autumn — and I’ve channeled that transitional inspiration into this month’s free tech wallpaper. Last weekend we popped over to a local farmer’s market where some incredibly lovely bouquets of sunflowers were on display and I couldn’t resist picking one up to share with all of you! The best part? Everything featured in September 2019’s Digital Blooms is organic, biodynamic, growing here in Alberta right now! I couldn’t think of a more perfect way to celebrate the season.

September’s DIGITAL BLOOMS are heavily inspired by the Pantone Autumn/Winter 2019/2020 Fashion Colour Trend Report featuring warm, transitional hues of Chili Pepper, Biking Red, Rocky Road, Sugar Almond and Dark Cheddar set on a moody Bluestone backdrop. Unique Chianti and Little Becka Sunflowers are complimented by RudbeckiaStrawflower, wild Firewheels and Barberry leaves in free desktop wallpaper that’s equal parts sunny and dramatic — just like the first month of autumn. LATE SUMMER 2019 LOOKBOOK

With 3 weeks of summer still to savour, I’m back today with my Late Summer 2019 Lookbook! As usual, it features everything I’ve been wearing and loving in both personal and professional settings over the last couple of months — plus innovative styling tips to help you extend the life of your summer wardrobe as we transition into autumn! Since I live in a climate where there’s snow covering the ground for 7+ months of the year, I love to make the most of my summer wardrobe (and put as many miles on my open-toed shoes as possible!) while the weather cooperates! Once of my favourite ways to blend summer and autumn is with colour — recently I’ve been really inspired by the Pantone Autumn/Winter 2019/2020 Fashion Colour Trend Report and am taking cues for my transitional style. As always, you can expect a mash-up of high, low, old, new and vintage in my Late Summer 2019 Lookbook — with the beautiful Alberta prairies and badlands as our backdrop! If you’re getting ready to transition your wardrobe into a new season but still hanging onto summer you’re in the right place — I’m dishing on how to blend the best of both seasons in this practical, FASHION-forward guide for style savvy.

SLOW COOKER VEGAN MULLIGATAWNY SOUP WITH RED LENTILS

I’m typing to you from the fringe of the 2019 polar vortex here in Calgary — and man, it’s cold outside (guess I spoke too soon about our unseasonably mild winter weather!). I’m very content to be curled up with a big bowl of Slow Cooker Vegan Mulligatawny Soup with Red Lentils in my chenille sweatpants and fuzzy sock as I edit this post! I hope everyone in affected areas is staying warm, cozy and safe out there.

But what better time than a polar vortex to make a hearty slow cooker recipe, am I right?! Warm up with a batch of my Slow Cooker Vegan Mulligatawny Soup with Red Lentils — an ultra clean, nourishing, protein packed, plant-based spin on a classic English soup with South Indian roots. The best part? You likely have most (if not all!) of these ingredients on hand and this recipe truly couldn’t be easier! A hearty base of red lentils combines with a mirepoix of carrots, celery, onion and apple simmered in an rich, exotically spiced, tomato-based broth with a splash of coconut milk and a kiss of cinnamon. Juicy pomegranate arils, toasted cashews and fresh cilantro garnish my favourite winter soup to perfection — creating a beautiful mosaic of inviting flavour, texture and colour where hearty winter produce sings. If you love vegetable-based curries and warming winter soups but want to try something new, this playful, plant-powered spin on authentic Indian mulligatawny is for you!

PATTERN PLAY | PAISLEY

Welcome back for a fresh installment in my PATTERN PLAY series today, friends! Earlier this autumn, we discussed all things snakeskin — one of AW18‘s hottest prints. While the pattern we’re focusing on in this post isn’t nearly as statement-making, I was absolutely thrilled to see a resurgence of paisley this season. Paisley is a very vintage feeling print that’s always had a special place in my wardrobe — but when I spotted this dress earlier this autumn (which I think would make a stunning holiday dress for you fellow bohemian beauties!) it was love at first sight! In true JustineCelina style I ordered her in 2 different colour stories and I have so much fun styling her up this autumn / winter. Today’s post, shot at my childhood home in rural Alberta, is dedicated to all things paisley — including the history of the print, styling options, tips to help you select your perfect paisley piece and tons of shoppable links at every price-point for your browsing pleasure!

Although I consider paisley to be a classic print, it’s also a polarizing one — you either love it or hate it. I personally love it! Paisley has graced the pages of JustineCelina many times, but made less of a statement (like in my vintage scarves, for example). It also has quite an interesting history! Although of Persian origin (the buta shape is characterized by an almond-shaped motif with a curved tip), paisley became popular in psychedelic culture in the 60’s thanks to The Beatles. The buta traditionally symbolizes fire and commonly makes an appearance on Persian carpets, rugs and textiles — but this season, we’ve seen it popping up more frequently in the form of dresses, skirts, blazers, scarves and ties. If you’re intrigued by this unconventional pattern and have been coveting a paisley piece of your own, settle in for a educational, fashion-focused read!
