INTERMISSION

Well hello, friends! If you don’t follow along with my Instagram Stories, you’re probably wondering where the heck I’ve been. It’s crazy to think it’s been over a month since I’ve posted — something I never envisioned would happen here at JustineCelina. And I promise it was never my intention to just abandon you guys and go MIA without an explanation. So, tonight I’m going to catch you up on everything that’s happened over the past month that’s contributed to my forced blogging break.

First things first, I’m okay. And thank you so much to all you kind souls who checked in on me or sent sweet messages while I was away. Although this past month has been incredibly challenging in every avenue of life, it’s also granted me a fresh perspective that I wouldn’t have otherwise gained without taking this unexpected step back — and for that I’m very grateful. This post is going to be a long one — so if you’re curious about what been going on in my life lately and what you can expect from me moving forward, get cozy, pour yourself a glass of wine and settle in for a real, raw, lengthy read!

EXPLORING EAST VILLAGE JUNCTION WITH TOURISM CALGARY

Happy Friday, friends! Things were a bit quiet here at JustineCelina during early June — and whenever that happens, I promise it’s for good reason! As I mentioned, I was working on a couple of exciting projects BTS — and this was one of them. We spent a beautiful Sunday earlier this month Exploring East Village Junction with Tourism Calgary — and you can read all about it in my second article for VisitCalgary.com!

If you’re craving an inner city adventure this weekend, I highly recommend spending a few hours exploring Calgary’s colourful East Village Junction! Tucked away behind the iconic King Edward Hotel on the corner of 4th Street and 8th Ave SE, EV’s liveliest lot showcases the vibrancy and charisma of Calgary’s oldest neighbourhood in an innovative, market-like community space where 15 local businesses and artisans have utilized shipping containers to create an entirely unique retail experience in Calgary’s core. Discover all #evJuction has to offer now through September 3rd — complete with unique wares for fashion, art, vintage and home decor enthusiasts, food trucks, delicious vegan eats, bicycle rentals, live performances and yes… even fitness classes! There’s something for everyone at Calgary’s East Village Junction Pop-up Retail Park — and today I’m sharing a handful of my favourite things to see, do, shop and eat!

JANUARY BLUES, 2018 PLANS + MY 300TH BLOG POST!

I kept flip flopping back and forth about this post — and that’s part of the reason it’s getting to you on February 1st, rather than January 1st. Should I just publish the TREND GUIDE I had originally planned for these photos? Should I save these thoughts for a traditional New Year, New Goals style post, or my 3rd Blogiversary? Should I open up about all these things? Or should I just proceed with regularly scheduled programming? Do people like more personal posts? Is it okay to publish 2 posts in one day? Will anyone even notice or care?

These are exactly the kind of over analytical, consuming thoughts that I can pretty much guarantee all creatives, bloggers and content creators have faced at one point or another while they’re in the process of creating whatever it is they create. But today, instead of the FASHION content I had originally written to accompany these images, I’m going to share something that’s been on my heart and my mind for the entire month of January. This year, there will be no New Year, New Goals post, like I’ve published every January since starting JustineCelina almost 3 years ago. There aren’t any styled flatlays with planners, coffee and flowers today — because here’s the truth. If you want to make real changes in your life, all the planners, scheduling tools and cute stationary in the world won’t do it for you. Only you can do that for yourself. So today, it’s just me.

TROPICAL ZINGER GREEN SMOOTHIE

Wow, according to my FOOD section I’d really like to be someplace hot right now! It’s the dead of winter here in Calgary — and this time I have my sights set on the tropics, with my Tropical Zinger Green Smoothie! Although there are tons of green smoothie recipes floating around the internet in January, you guys voted for this recipe back in December via Insta Stories when I rediscovered it one day post workout. It’s about 3 and a half years old — in fact, if I scroll way back in my Instagram feed, I can still find the original post. This is long before I started blogging and would simply share my smoothie recipes on my feed with friends and family. Last month we had a pineapple ripening on the counter and a big bag of spinach to use up — I was sweaty, hungry and thirsty after my at-home HIIT workout (oh, the glamour!) and I remembered this recipe. I actually whipped out my phone and searched for it here on the blog — but to my surprise, I’d never published it! We always have the rest of the ingredients stocked at this time of year, so I decided to revive this old favourite and have enjoyed it countless times since. Yes, this is another green smoothie recipe — but I guarantee it’s one of the best green smoothies you’ll ever taste!

My Tropical Zinger Green Smoothie combines all the island flavours I’ve been craving lately — creamy banana, sweet pineapple, zingy satsuma, hearty pear, bright lime, healing ginger and hydrating coconut water — plus a mega dose of nutritious spinach and omega rich chia seeds (I promise you can’t taste the spinach at all!). This tropical elixir is packed full of vitamins, potassium, iron and protein — I often make it for lunch or breakfast to help with post workout recovery and give me an energy boost to power through the rest of my day. It’s also a great way to persuade your littles to eat their fruits and vegetables! Whip up a Tropical Zinger Green Smoothie anytime you’re craving a taste of the tropics — it’s refreshing, revitalizing and reminiscent of a super charged pinã colada (no white sandy beach required!).

WINTER ACTIVEWEAR ESSENTIALS

It’s been awhile since my last fitness post, so I thought it was the perfect time to chat about staying active (and warm) this winter! If you read about My Fitness Routine, you’ll know that while I’m fairly new to maintaining a workout regime, I am pretty dedicated to keeping up with my health and fitness goals in an attainable way. For me, consistency is key and I need something quick but effective if I’m going to stick with it long term. Admittedly, these frigid temperatures often leave me feeling unmotivated to get outside and enjoy the season — it sure is beautiful, but baby it’s cold outside!

Last week, a lovely gift arrived from my friends at Sport Chek to help me stay cozy (and stylish) this winter as temperatures in Calgary plummet. Whether you’ve resolved to stick to your current routine throughout the holidays, want to jumpstart a healthier lifestyle in 2017, or are shopping for a motivating gift for someone special this season, Sport Chek truly has everything you need under one roof — and that convenience is exactly what I (and I’m sure many of you) are looking for this time of year. Come along with me today as I unbox the latest in Winter Activewear Essentials this holiday season and put them to the test in Calgary’s arctic weather!

MY FITNESS ROUTINE

If you would have told me a year ago that I’d be creating a blog post about my fitness routine, I would have said you were crazy! Well my friends, that’s exactly what’s happening today — I’m sharing a workout routine that I’m proud to report I’ve been sticking with 6 days per week since February. As someone who’s consistently prioritized almost everything over my fitness for years, I’m so excited to finally have found something that works for me. If you have 15 just free minutes most days and the desire to workout anywhere without any equipment, you can do these workouts too. Did anyone else resolve to work on their fitness this year? Since we’re halfway into 2016, I thought it would be the perfect time to check in and share how I’m working towards my goals. I’m also chatting about my new HIIT training gear — because who doesn’t like to sweat in style?

NEW YEAR, NEW GOALS: PLANNING FOR A SUCCESSFUL 2016

You may have noticed a few aesthetic changes here at JustineCelina to kick off 2016, but that’s just the beginning! I’m taking 2016 as an opportunity for a fresh start, which includes a fresh look, fresh ideas, and new goals for a New Year. I know some people aren’t keen on the idea of New Years resolutions, but now is as good a time as any to set new goals and intentions for yourself. I think it’s important to check in with yourself often — the last time I checked in was during my Sober September (yep, I gave up alcohol for a whole month, and you can read about what else I accomplished, too). Checking in and reevaluating is something I like to do often — so today I’m sharing 5 goals, resolutions and plans for a successful 2016! Continue Reading
