WINTER 2018 TREND GUIDE | VELVET UNDERGROUND

March is upon us, but winter is still very much alive and well here in Alberta. In fact, in all my years living in Calgary, I can’t remember a winter when we’ve had this much snow (I’m not even exaggerating, the piles are taller than I am!). So, what’s a fashionista to do? This year, I resolved not to let old man winter put a damper on my personal style — after all, life must go on and I’m a firm believer in looking and feeling your best, no matter the weather. So, for my final TREND GUIDE of the season, I’m sharing a cozy look featuring some of my favourite luxe, winter fabrics — but I’m also taking cues from SS18 trend forecasts. This transitional, winter-meets-spring look is two parts new and one part vintage — with a dash of bad ass thrown in for good measure (and yes, I listened to The Velvet Underground the entire time I edited this post!).

If you’re ready to rev up some classic pieces in your winter wardrobe with an infusion of key spring trends, this post is for you! Today I’m chatting about velvet, baker boy hats, millennial pink, daytime sequins, fuzzy fabrics and gold accessories — plus how you can wear these trends right now, as well as transition them into spring. Don’t let the March blah’s get you down — let’s end winter with a bang this season with my WINTER 2018 TREND GUIDE | VELVET UNDERGROUND and tons of shoppable links at every price point!

DIGITAL BLOOMS MARCH 2018 | FREE DESKTOP WALLPAPERS

Spring is almost in the air… can you feel it?! Join Rebecca Dawn Design and I today in celebrating a new season with our March 2018 DIGITAL BLOOMS — inspired by Spring 2018’s vivacious selection of brights and pastels. Never before have I been so inspired by a colour palette (yep, the Pantone Spring 2018 Colour Trend Report is still giving me major heart eyes!) — I cannot wait to start wearing it and continuing to work with it across categories as the weather warms up (currently fantasizing about open toed shoes and dresses with bare legs!). Until then however, I’ll eagerly be awaiting spring’s arrival with a jubilant array of cheerful spring blooms and herbs — including these incredible, extremely rare lavender Garden Roses, Ranunculus, Lavender (which you’ll we learning more about this spring!), Alstroemeria, Matricaria, Asiatic Lilies, Ornithogalum, Double and Parrot Tulips (learn more about them here), Hyacinth, Pom Pom Chrysanthemums and Blue Delphinium. Sartorially, it’s all about the combination of brights with pastels as we transition into balmier weather — so why embrace the season’s colour trends on your digital devices as well?

Take spring cleaning to the next level this March and freshen up your tech to welcome a new brand new season! Infuse your digital devices with a fun splash of colour and enjoy the whimsy of our March floral selections on the background of your computer, tablet or phone all month long. As we transition into spring, Rebecca and I are particular inspired by Pantone’s Meadowlark, Little Boy Blue, Pink Lavender, Blooming Dahlia, Ultra Violet, Almost Mauve and Spring Crocus. We’ve also included designs on two candy coloured, pastel backgrounds this month to help chase those winter blues away (spring is only a few short weeks away, friends!). FEBRUARY 2018 SOUNDTRACK

Music lovers, welcome back for another Monthly Soundtrack! If you can appreciate music from pretty much every genre (except country… for obvious reasons!), you’ll love my February 2018 Soundtrack — these 37 song are truly all over the map! This past month, I listened to everything — we’re talking hip hop, R&B, electronic, tropical house, chillwave, instrumental, alt pop, indie, folk — and the list goes on. I also rediscovered my love for a band I initially featured here at JustineCelina last September called slenderbodies (they have an alt-J sound, but more chill) and included a handful of my favourite tracks. And I had the New Moon playlist by The Joshua Tree House on repeat — a super chill, folky, feel good mix (also, if you love boho desert vibes and major decor inspo and you’re not following them on Instagram… what are you doing with your life?!).

This month, my ears especially enjoyed Surfaces Loving, Half and Orange featuring Bijou’s Chuck Taylors, Kendrick Lamar’s PRIDE., Sun Glitters It’s Ended Before It’s Begun, Dreamers Delight’s Blazin’, Borealism’s Magnolia Dream, BluntOne and Sensi’s Time, Cherub’s Living, LANY’s Super Far, slenderbodies gray, blood to gold and amnesia, Vashti Bunyan’s Diamond Day, Brett’s Roman Candle, Litany’s Bedroom and Blake Mills’ It’ll All Work Out. If you’re feeling musically adventurous and looking for some fresh tunes as we transition into spring, my February 2018 Soundtrack is for you!

TRUFFLED BUTTERNUT SQUASH SOUP WITH CRISPY SAGE

I can’t believe it’s been nearly a year since I shared a pureed soup here at JustineCelina! And would you believe I’ve never actually published a butternut squash soup recipe? Butternut squash soup is a staple recipe in many kitchens during the cooler months — ours included. Although my Autumn Harvest Soup with Roasted Squash Seeds (published back in my early blogging days!) includes butternut squash, it also features a medley of fall produce — including apples, carrots and rhubarb. So, my standard butternut squash soup recipe remained unpublished over the years — you see, as a food blogger, these staple recipes often remain in my archives because I don’t think they’re exciting or unique enough to share. But, this winter I experimented with one of my favourite gourmet ingredients to really elevate this recipe — and here we are!

Today I’m thrilled to bring you my Truffled Butternut Squash Soup with Crispy Sage — a luxurious, sophisticated twist on a cold weather classic. With just 10 ingredients, this creamy bowl of vegan comfort is a breeze to whip up and makes a great light lunch or accompaniment to dinner. Hearty butternut squash is oven roasted with onions, fresh sage and garlic — then blended into velvety goodness with vegetable broth, coconut milk, fresh ginger and a touch of heat. To finish things off, it’s infused with an indulgent drizzle of White Truffle Oil (my most recent culinary obsession!) and garnished with crispy sage for a restaurant quality soup you can enjoy at home. Thanks to a couple of elevated ingredients, this isn’t your traditional butternut squash soup recipe — but I guarantee you it’s just as simple to prepare! If you’re in the mood for some nourishing comfort food with gourmet flair to help endure these last few weeks of winter, I have just the recipe — and I’m also sharing my favourite source for high quality, affordable White Truffle Oil!

The time of year has come when winter really seems to drag on. Despite actually having pretty nice weather until late January, the past few weeks the have left a lot to be desired (I was snowed in for 3 days last week!). So today, I’m sharing a new post in my HOW TO STYLE series — and this time, I’m chatting about fresh ways to style your midi dresses for winter, incorporating a mashup of winter and spring trends with wardrobe staples in a boho chic look you can wear right now!

ROSE INFUSED CHERRY GIN FIZZ

Remember the summer I acquired a taste for gin? It’s since become my favourite spirit. In fact, around this time last year I even ventured to Vancouver Island to track down an infamous local gin unavailable in Alberta (I also made a cocktail with that one!). Although the gin I brought home from my coastal travels is long gone, late last year I stumbled on Eau Claire Distillery via Instagram (their bottles are gorgeous and totally drew me in!). Imagine my surprise to find out we have an incredible, award winning distillery less than an hour from home! Over the holidays I took a trip to the visit their distillery in Turner Valley with my Mom (who loves gin) and my brother (who was home from New York and loves cocktails) for a tour and tasting — and we were all completely blown away by the quality of Eau Claire’s hand crafted offerings and their farm to glass approach. Now that I know they exist (and they’re local!) I actually can’t fathom using anything else in my cocktails! Over the last couple of months, we’ve padded our bar with several of Eau Claire’s artisinal spirits — including their most recent offering, Cherry Gin.

In honour of love day, I’m so excited to share my Rose Infused Cherry Gin Fizz! This feminine, fruity and lightly floral cocktail combines Eau Claire’s stunning Cherry Gin with my favourite Prosecco, a splash of fresh lemon juice and a Rose & Pink Peppercorn Infused Honey Simple Syrup for a contemporary spin on the classic French 75. My Rose Infused Cherry Gin Fizz is a beautiful addition to your Valentine’s Day menu, but can be enjoyed anytime you want to indulge in a gourmet craft cocktail at home! As always, it’s free of dairy, gluten and refined sugar — and bursting with fruity flavours, floral undertones, unique botanicals and a refreshing effervescence. The best part? Eau Claire is helping me share the love this Valentine’s Day by giving away a Cherry Gin Cocktail Caddy valued at $99 to one of my Canadian friends — check out the bottom of the post for details on how to enter!
