Happy Saturday, everyone! I hope everyone is enjoying this chilly weekend. I’m back today with a fresh juice recipe that takes my citrus obsession to new heights — my Citrus Season Elixir! If you’ve been following along with Insta Stories this past week, you’ll know that we did a juice cleanse last weekend. Surprisingly, it was Adam’s idea — and it was pretty successful! Everyday since Wednesday I’ve treated myself to a fresh juice — and on Friday I decided to drink a fresh juice everyday for 30 days (you can join the #justinecelina30dayjuicechallenge too, more on that in this post!). I came up with the recipe for my Citrus Season Elixir on Wednesday — and with citrus season at its peak, I’m thrilled that you voted for it to publish next. I’ve enjoyed it 4 times this week already — it’s totally addictive and I seriously cannot stop drinking it!
My Citrus Season Elixir is an ode to one of my favourite times of year for produce — January’s bountiful citrus season! If you’ve been with me since last winter, you’ll already know how obsessed I am with blood oranges, but this year, I’m absolutely crazy about all things citrus. This refreshing glass of liquid sunshine combines blood oranges, red grapefruit, lemons, carrots, apples and ginger to create a powerhouse elixir — brimming with a mega dose of vitamins, antioxidants and anti aging ingredients. Enjoy my ultra refreshing Citrus Season Elixir to help replenish your body post workout, or anytime you need a colourful pick-me-up this winter!
CITRUS SEASON ELIXIR
As things usually go around here, this isn’t the recipe I planned to publish today! I had originally scheduled my Winter Abundance Bowls with Pepita Sage Pesto — but they call for pomegranates, and this city is dry. I can’t find pomegranates anywhere! And if I can’t find pomegranates, you guys won’t be able to find them either. So, I’ve put it on the books for early next winter — and to be honest, I’m kind of glad it worked out that way! We’ve practically been buying blood oranges by the crate full (in fact, I’m sure that would be much more economical!) — they’re just so good right now. I didn’t want to wait too long to get my Citrus Season Elixir out for you, so you can enjoy it while blood oranges (and grapefruits, and lemons!) are at maximum deliciousness!
Calgarians, my favourite place to find blood oranges is at Co-op Midtown Market. They likely have them at other Co-op locations throughout the city, but I’d give your closest location a call first to make sure! Not only are blood oranges beautiful, they have an amazing, rich citrus flavour with notes of raspberry. They’re one of my favourite orange varieties (remember my satsuma phase earlier this winter?!) and they’re at their peak right now — but typically they stick around until mid February. However, if you stumble on this post in the future and it’s not the height of citrus season (and you can’t find blood oranges anywhere), not to worry. You can absolutely make my Citrus Season Elixir with regular oranges — it will be equally as delicious, the colour will just be a bit different.
Now, I could sit here and yammer on about each ingredient and all the amazing health benefits that each one possesses, but I’ll keep it short ‘n sweet today — this juice is only full of the good stuff! Citrus fruits support clear, healthy skin (major beauty food!), help lower our risk for disease and may also aid in weight loss when enjoyed as part of a healthy diet. When paired with apples, carrots and ginger, you’ve got yourself one powerful elixir to help fuel those January resolutions!
Ingredients
Yield: Approximately 24 oz.
1 large serving, or 2 regular servings
• 2 blood oranges
• 1 large red grapefruit
• 2 apples
• 5 carrots
• 1 tbsp fresh ginger
• 1 lemon
Note: I’ve been refrigerating all the rinds from my citrus in plastic bags this week to make Boxwood Avenue’s Non-Toxic Homemade Kitchen Cleaner. I made a big batch last year around this time and I can’t wait to make it again! It’s a fantastic cleaner that leaves a subtle orange scent behind and really makes everything sparkle. By the way, I absolutely adore Chloe’s blog — if you do pop over, be sure to tell her I sent you!
Instructions
1. Start with chilled produce. Chop all ingredients into 1″ pieces.
2. Add ingredients one at a time to your Hurom Slow Juicer (or similar), starting with an ingredient that isn’t as juicy (like ginger), and alternating with an ingredient that makes lots of juice (like carrots). This will ensure that the juicy ingredients flush the not-so-juicy ingredients through the juicer and you’ll get more of them in your cup!
3. Once you’ve juiced all of your ingredients, stir the juice and pour into glasses.
4. Totally optional (but fancy and fun!) — add a blood orange slice to adorn each glass, and enjoy!

30 DAY FRESH JUICE CHALLENGE
Interested in joining me on my 30 Day Fresh Juice Challenge? Here’s how it works. Simply incorporate 1 fresh juice into your meal plan every day for 30 days! I typically enjoy them as a meal replacement for breakfast or lunch, but you could also have a juice for dinner as well. Or, don’t use them as a meal replacement — just incorporate 1 fresh juice per day for 30 days into your diet in any way that suits you. Easy, right?! I’ve already been feeling so much more energetic and inspired — I’m sure I’ll come up with tons of fresh juice recipes along the way as well (stay tuned to Stories if you’re looking for some fresh ideas!).
If you’d like to join me, you can start anytime! I’m already 4 days in today (Saturday, January 27th), so my last day will be February 22nd. If you’re participating and would like to share one of your juice creations, use #justinecelina30dayjuicechallenge on social media — so we can help keep each other motivated and share ideas!

SHOP MY FAVOURITE JUICER
We’ve owned our Hurom Slow Juicer for nearly a decade and it’s still going strong! We selected this juicer because it’s slow masticating and cold press — meaning it presses the juice out of produce (more slowly) rather than less expensive models that completely shred it. This ultimately means more nutrients in your cup! Plus, it’s a breeze to clean.
