COLOURPOP ULTRA SATIN LIP PHOTOS, REVIEW, SWATCHES

You guys, Colourpop did it again! If you’ve been with me for awhile you’ll know how much I love Colourpop Cosmetics — an innovative, affordable, cruelty-free makeup brand hailing from L.A. Last spring when their first line of liquid lipsticks launched, I loved them so much that I did a dedicated review post. And while I do still love the original Ultra Matte Lips, the liquid lipstick world has blown up over the last year — formulas have been perfected, colour ranges have expanded, and brands are really listening to what consumers are looking for. So, when I heard Colourpop launched an Ultra Satin Lip formula that was supposed to by less drying, you know I had to try it out! Click through for my full Colourpop Ultra Satin Lip review, with lots of photos, swatches and comparisons to the original Ultra Matte Lip formula.

COLOURPOP ULTRA SATIN LIP PHOTOS, REVIEW, SWATCHES

Product Overview

This is a relatively new release from the brand — there are currently there are 23 shades available, and I decided to pick up 10 from the range to try out. Colourpop’s Ultra Satin Lips retail at $6.00 USD for 0.11 oz., just a fraction of the cost of their high-end counterparts. Here’s the gist: I love this formula! They dry down to a comfortable, satiny finish and are long wearing, but not transfer proof. These wear about 6 – 8 hours on me, and last pretty well through eating and drinking, but you’ll likely have to reapply. They fade evenly and retouching is no problem. If you’ve always wanted to try a liquid lipstick, or the original Ultra Matte formula was too drying for you, I think you’ll love the Ultra Satin Lips too. Of all the lip products I’ve tried so far this year, this is my favourite new release!

I’m going to be comparing these to the Ultra Matte Lips during this review, since they’re the closest point of reference I have, and you’re probably all wondering about the differences. To start, the formula is very different between these two. Keep in mind I purchased the original formula in the Ultra Matte Lips, which is hands down the driest liquid lipstick formula I’ve used — but also the most long wearing. By comparison, the Ultra Satin Lip formula is thicker and more mousey in texture — it feels almost whipped. They’re lightly hydrating on the lips and don’t dry down to a matte finish, but remain satiny. It’s a much more forgiving, comfortable formula than the Ultra Matte Lips, not quite as long wearing. I think it’s a bit of a trade off. I definitely prefer the Ultra Satin Lip formula to the original Ultra Matte Lip formula, especially transitioning from spring into summer when I crave more moisture in my lip products. The Ultra Satin Lips also don’t dry down as fast, so you can apply multiple layers to touch up without any issues. They’re also very pigmented and fully opaque in one pass. Like the Ultra Matte Lips, they have no taste or scent.

The packaging is simple and sleek. The doe foot applicator seems a little bit stiff compared to other brands I’ve tried (and is identical to the Ultra Matte Lip applicator). It works well to apply product to the lips.

If you’re interested in trying a hydrating liquid lipstick, or you’re looking to expand your collection, I can’t recommend the Ultra Satin Lips enough! The quality of the product is amazing and the wear time is fantastic, especially compared to high-end liquid lipsticks, which can run you anywhere from $15 – $30 each. Of the liquid lipsticks I’ve tried, this formula is most similar to the Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipsticks — which retail at $26.00 CAD.

Application & Removal

Colourpop Ultra Satin Lip Photos, Review, Swatches // JustineCelina.com

These don’t require the same intense lip prep as the Ultra Matte Lips, so as long and your lips are bare and dry you’re good to go. What I like to do is put on a super thick lip moisturizer (my favourite is the My Favorite Night Balm) before I start my makeup. I apply my foundation and base first, and then once I’m ready to move onto the lips, I remove the lip moisturizer with a q-tip fully, make sure my lips are dry, then apply the liquid lipstick. This ensures your lips are moisturized, smooth and freshly exfoliated — ready for lip product!

The Ultra Satin Lips come off pretty well with my cleanser when I’m removing my makeup, but I use Desert Essence 100% Pure Jojoba Oil to remove any leftover traces of them. After I was finished photographing the swatches on my arm, I scrubbed at them with jojoba oil, and my cleanser, and there were still traces of them left.

Shade Range

Colourpop Ultra Satin Lip Photos, Review, Swatches // JustineCelina.com

Currently there are 23 shades available, and I own 10. They’re always releasing new shades and limited edition collections, so I assume they’ll continue to expand the range. I picked out shades that I don’t have anything similar to in other liquid lipstick formulas, and I usually gravitate towards warmer colours (since that’s what looks best on my skintone). I did pick up a few colours totally outside of my comfort zone, too! They have a wide range of colours available (even some blues and greys), so you’ll definitely be able to find colours you like. The nudes in the range learn neutral to warm, which is a nice change from the Ultra Matte Lip nudes, which definitely lean more cool to grey. I think Colourpop did a fantastic job with the shades in the Ultra Satin Lip range — overall they’re very wearable. One thing I found true for all shades is that they look lighter in the tube than they do on your lips once they dry down.

The other thing I like to do with these is mix shades. Sometimes I like to pop a lighter shade in the centre of my lips to make them look bigger, or mix shades together to create a custom shade, and apply it with a lip brush.

Colourpop Ultra Satin Lip in Magic Wand

Colourpop Ultra Satin Lip in Magic Wand Photos, Review, Swatches // JustineCelina.com

Colourpop describes Magic Wand as ‘a light nude’. It’s the second to lightest shade in the range and it’s the most nude I personally will go. On me, it’s a neutral, brown-based, light nude. I’d pair this one up with a darker lip liner to add definition and make it a bit more wearable. It’s a versatile nude that I think would suit a variety of skintones!

Colourpop Ultra Satin Lip in Echo Park

Colourpop Ultra Satin Lip in Echo Park Photos, Review, Swatches // JustineCelina.com

Colourpop describes Echo Park as a ‘warm peachy nude’. On me, it’s a true nude — it’s exactly the same colour as my natural lips! I’ve never found a lipstick that mimics my lip colour more accurately and I know I’ll be wearing it a lot. Of all the nudes in the range, I think this is the most wearable.

Colourpop Ultra Satin Lip in Frick N’ Frack

Colourpop describes Frick N’ Frack as a ‘rosy terracotta’ and I think that’s totally accurate. On me it’s a perfect marsala shade, slightly deeper and more brown than their Bumble Ultra Matte Lip. It’s a deep nude with some drama — perfect for the fall!

Colourpop Ultra Satin Lip in Lyin’ King

Colourpop Ultra Satin Lip in Lyin' King Photos, Review, Swatches // JustineCelina.com

Colourpop describes Lyin’ King as a ‘saturated raspberry’. This is such a gorgeous shade! Everything about it is so velvety, rich and luxurious. It’s definitely one of my favourites from the range and it makes your teeth look really white.

Colourpop Ultra Satin Lip in Botanical

Colourpop Ultra Satin Lip in Botanical Photos, Review, Swatches // JustineCelina.com

Colourpop describes Botanical as a ‘neon peachy coral’, but I wasn’t prepared for how neon it really is! I think the swatches represent the colour accurately, but in person it’s somehow even more neon. It has a white base and it’s super intense, but it’s a fun shade if you’re feeling brave! I’ve been mixing it into the nude shades to make them more peachy and I love it for that purpose.

Colourpop Ultra Satin Lip in Molly

Colourpop Ultra Satin Lip in Molly Photos, Review, Swatches // JustineCelina.com

Colourpop describes Molly as a ‘midtone plum lilac’. This is the shade I immediately gravitated towards and put on as soon as my order arrived! I really love this one. It’s such a wearable lilac, without making your teeth look yellow. There’s a lot of depth to this colour and it’s one of the thicker formulas, which makes it really flattering.

Colourpop Ultra Satin Lip in Tansy

Colourpop Ultra Matte Lip in Tansy Photos, Review, Swatches // JustineCelina.com

Colourpop describes Tansy as a ‘medium-toned yellow brown’ and that’s exactly how it translates on me. This one is the wildcard of the bunch and I’m surprised by how much I like it. Because it’s yellow-based, it’s a little more summery than the more traditional deeper brown liquid lipsticks we’ve seen lately, such as Colourpop’s Ultra Matte Lip in Limbo.

Colourpop Ultra Satin Lip in Naked Ladies

Colourpop Ultra Satin Lip in Naked Ladies Photos, Review, Swatches // JustineCelina.com

Colourpop describes Naked Ladies as a ‘bright coral red’. It’s a gorgeous watermelon shade on me — slightly deeper, redder and more wearable than their Ultra Matte Lip in Ouiji. This is a perfect summer colour that I think anyone could wear!

Colourpop Ultra Satin Lip in Cozy

Colourpop Ultra Satin Lip in Cozy Photos, Review, Swatches // JustineCelina.com

Colourpop describes Cozy as a ‘true orange red’. As soon as I put it on, my first impression was that it was a perfect tomato red. I have a soft spot for orange-based reds, and I know I’ll be wearing Cozy so much this summer. Another universally flattering shade!

Colourpop Ultra Satin Lip in Lost

Colourpop Ultra Matte Lip in Lost Photos, Review, Swatches // JustineCelina.com

Colourpop describes Lost as a ‘warm-toned brown red’. As soon as I put it on, I thought it was the most perfect shade of crimson — it’s so unique and mesmerizing! If you’ve always wanted to try a darker lip colour but aren’t sure where to start, a shade like Lost would be a perfect introduction. It’s such a luscious, wearable colour!

Keep in mind that lip colours look completely different on different skintones. For reference, I have light / medium skin with yellow-warm undertones — I’m a MAC NC 25 – 30.

I completely agree with your review Justine, it’s not a transfer proof but it’s velvety and not dry your lips but it still long last wearable and fade evenly after you eat or drink! This is what I love from Colourpop Ultra Satin much better than any other liquid lipstick that I ever use before. I’ve tried many brands liquid matte lipstick but I keep coming back again to Colourpop because it’s last long and fade evenly, I don’t find it in any other brand but Colourpop. I love shade November, Schnookums & Lyin King.

    • Reply Justine June 4, 2017 at 7:45 pm

Colourpop Ultra Satin’s really are some of the best you can buy for the money! If you’re ever looking to delve into a fantastic high end liquid lipstick that isn’t drying, I’ve completely fallen in love with the Huda Beauty Matte Liquid Lipsticks — they’re a little more matte than these, but still super comfortable and the shades are gorgeous! I’ve linked posts where I mention them here. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by today Nadia — it’s always nice to see a new face around here!
