After 10 days of rain and some crazy storms here in Alberta, I took full advantage of a few brief days of sunshine earlier this week. Today I’m chatting about carefree summer style and my favourite easy pieces to wear on hot summer days. You know, those simple ‘one and done’ pieces that practically style themselves — you can just throw them on and go? That’s what today’s post is all about! I’m also sharing some great accessories to add interest to easy summer outfits along with my go-to pair of oversized shades. Come adventure to the beautiful canola fields right behind my family’s acreage in rural Alberta and enjoy some virtual Vitamin D!

HERE COMES THE SUN
This summer in Calgary, when the sun is shining you don’t question it — you just get outside and enjoy! I live in carefree, breezy summer dresses on those days. I love dresses with intricate patterns and details — you can just throw them on with a great pair of sunglasses and go!
I fell head over heels for this adorable Multicolor Sleeveless Print Tassel Shift Dress and have received so many compliments and questions about it. It’s so easy to wear and it also incorporates a few of my favourite summer trends — tassels and blue! Tassels have been on trend for awhile now and I’ve been loving cool, blue hues lately against summer skin. If you love this dress as much as I go, grab it while you can! It’s sold out online a few times since I ordered it but was in stock at the time I published this post.
The canola is in full bloom right now and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to shoot this carefree summer style post in a canola field. Conveniently, this field is located right behind my family’s acreage in rural Alberta. It was so much fun to play around in this gorgeous golden light before sunset (and after a glass of wine, may I add!). It’s been awhile since we shot at golden hour and I forgot how much I love the different effects of sunlight in imagery. It’s also an interesting process because this magical golden light only lasts for about half an hour — so you have to work fast and be spontaneous! I also love the way the sunny hues of the canola compliment the blue pattern in my dress.
I’m a big fan of ring sets and hand chains in the summertime — I think they’re a great way to add interest and to a simple outfit and put your own personal signature on it. The exact ones I’ve wearing in these photos are years old, but I’ve linked some similar options for you!
I tried something different with my hair in these photos — what do you guys think? After my collaborative post with Dawn Bradley Hair earlier this month I’ve been feeling really inspired to experiment. I used a deep waver to create these bohemian, braid-like crimps and I love the effect! I tend to gravitate towards more textured styles during the summer and like to play around with my hair if I have time.
Since I rock my natural hair colour and love the length, styling my hair in different ways keeps me from getting bored and making drastic decisions. I worked at a hair salon for years during college and have had every single hair colour and length imaginable before setting back into my long, natural hair. Ironically, I actually like it a lot — and it’s free!
What would a carefree summer outfit be without a great pair of oversized shades? You’ll find me living in sunglasses that cover half my face during the summertime — and for good reason! Sunglasses help to protect your delicate eye area from harmful UV rays and make you feel like a rockstar in doing so. What’s not to love? This pair is an old favourite and I have them in both tortoise and black. I love a good pair of oversized, vintage-inspired sunnies!

Thanks so much for stopping by and for the sweet comment, Becky! Have a fantastic weekend. 🙂
I love the waves! Such a fun look, and they look so natural. The golden hour is such a fun time to take photos, but it’s definitely tricky with such a short window. All of these photos are gorgeous, and this is such a fun, easy look.
Thanks for all the love, Heather! You’re definitely right about golden hour being tricky (but oh so beautiful!). I appreciate you stopping by!
[…] Bite describes Gingersnap as a fresh peach, but I think it’s more of a mid-toned, neutral coral. It’s very peachy but very wearable and it’s my favourite shade of the bunch — I think of it as a coral nude. It adds the perfect amount of colour to your completion without being overwhelming and also coordinates well with other makeup you may be wearing. A perfect summer shade! If you want to see it outside in different lighting conditions, I’m also wearing it in this style post. […]

This is such a fun post; from the dress to the landscape, everything made me happy :). You have a fantastic smile that should make more appearances on the blog! Also, I love the look of the crimped hair – it’s a bit more carefree than a classic loose curl. I’ve got a waver and have used it, like, once. Haha! So thanks for the inspiration to pull it out this coming weekend!
Thanks so much, Anneke — I’m glad it brightened your day. 🙂 I was definitely a little more smiley than usual shooting these photos after a glass of wine. Haha! I don’t use my deep waver often either but it’s definitely fun and my waves lasted until I washed them out. It’s always so nice to read your comments, thanks for stopping by! I hope you’re well and are enjoying your pregnancy!
Thanks for the well wishes! Pregnancy is treating me well; only 1.5 months to go!!!
I’m glad to hear it — so exciting! 🙂
