A SIMPLE EASTER DINNER FOR TWO

Remember when I mentioned over the holidays that I wanted to bring more ENTERTAIN content to JustineCelina this year? Although these weren’t quite the circumstances I envisioned (now that’s an understatement!), I’m thrilled to share A Simple Easter Dinner For Two with you today! While Easter certainly looked a lot different for everyone this year given the current global situation, we decided to make the most of it and celebrate here in our home in Calgary — just the two of us. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine we’d spend an Easter without the large family gatherings in the country we’ve become accustomed to over the years — but rather than mourning the loss of our cherished traditions, we resolved to stay home and create a few of our own!

In over a decade together, this was the first Easter dinner we’ve celebrated in our home — and I wanted to mark the occasion by capturing these memories to look back on. I put on a dress, ordered flowers, made some nostalgic family recipes along with my first ever carrot cake — then we popped some Prosecco and enjoyed A Simple Easter Dinner For Two (Adam was actually peeling potatoes in the kitchen to my left as I snapped these photos from my tripod!). I was reminded of my ability to find beauty in uncertainty and create amongst chaos — these are things I find very cathartic and truly bring me joy. While it wasn’t a traditional Easter, it was still a lovely weekend — gifting us with lessons in resiliency, enjoying life’s simple pleasures and doing the best you can with what you have, where you are! Whether you’ve stopped by today for details on our Easter in quarantine, are planning a more intimate Easter gathering of your own, or are visiting years in the future once this is all behind us in search of some easy Easter entertaining ideas, I’ve got you covered!

WINTER / SPRING 2020 LOOKBOOK + CONTENT UPDATE

Hey, friends. How’s everyone doing? Wow — what an intense couple of months its been! If you keep up with me on Instagram (and if you don’t, I’d love for you to join me!), you may have some insight into how quickly life has changed here in Calgary as a result of COVID-19. It’s crazy to think that we started shooting my Winter / Spring 2020 Lookbook back in February when the world was a completely different place — I was still planning outfits for all the different personal and professional situations I would typically find myself in as we transition from winter to spring. Things evolved rapidly, so I polled you on Instagram Stories to see if you’d still like to see this LOOKBOOK — and 100% of you responded yes! That said, as we heed the advice of local authorities to stay in whenever possible, I feel it’s important to share we shot these images nearly 2 months ago — and I’ve been working from home ever since to get this post ready.

Today, I’m thrilled to finally share my Winter / Spring 2020 Lookbook with you! If you’re in search of a sartorial escape from reality and a look at a handful of my favourite winter-to-spring transitional trends mashed up with wardrobe staples and practical outfit formulas, you’ve come to the right place. As always, you can expect a melange of high, low, old, new and vintage here today — as well as shoppable links at every price point for those in need of a little retail therapy. This LOOKBOOK features my favourite early spring outfit formulas, ideal for temperatures ranging from about 10 degrees on either side of freezing (believe it or not, it was still snowing here last week!). Even though we’ll be spending the majority of our time indoors for the foreseeable future, I still enjoy seasonal trends mixed with easy basics — and showing you how to re-style them season after season (and year after year!). Pour yourself a delicious glass of rosé and settle in with me this weekend as I highlight my favourite winter-to-spring transitional trends, patterns, prints and colours — plus, how I incorporate them into my work-from-home wardrobe!

DIGITAL BLOOMS APRIL 2020 | FREE DESKTOP WALLPAPER + DIGITAL BLOOMS TURNS 4!

Bohemian beauties, April 2020’s edition of DIGITAL BLOOMS is for you! I’ve been wanting to incorporate Pampas Grass into one of my free monthly tech wallpapers for quite some time — and to celebrate DIGITAL BLOOMS 4th birthday (say what?!), I’ve done just that! This month I’m embracing all things free spirited, feminine and ethereal with April 2020’s free desktop wallpaper, which combines Purple Haze Lavender Roses, Quicksand Roses, Spray Roses (learn All About Roses), Pampas Grass, and other foraged prairie grasses from my childhood home in rural Alberta. My All About Pampas Grass post has become the most popular piece of content here at JustineCelina over the past year — so I know you love pampas just as much as I do!

As we transition into spring, I’m feeling inspired by delicate pastels and creamy off-white hues — so April 2020’s free tech wallpaper embraces this seasons softer side. Enjoy this lovely selection of classic roses juxtaposed with modern pampas and foraged Alberta grasses in the background of your phone, tablet, laptop or desktop all month long, absolutely free! I hope April 2020’s Digital Blooms provide a lighthearted reprieve during these dark times. Even though the flower shops are closed, my DIGITAL BLOOMS are always here and available for you 24/7 — simply click through to download April’s free desktop wallpaper straight to your devices. Be well and stay safe friends — I’m sending light and love to each and every one of you!

MARCH 2020 SOUNDTRACK

Music has always been a huge part of my life, no matter what season I find myself in. I relish in discovering new artists, genres and melodies that help me feel inspired, grounded, focused and calm — and I’ve relied on music to do that more than even over the past month! My March 2020 Soundtrack is my longest of the year, featuring nearly 3 hours of uplifting, mellow, motivational tracks spanning nearly every genre. If you’re looking for a musical reprieve amidst the chaos of the world, this soundtrack is available for you anytime, anywhere, day or night! As always, I’ve embedded a Spotify player in this post — but if you like, you can also come join me over there. I’m constantly listening to new music and contributing to each Monthly Soundtrack as the days go by!

March was the most inspiring month, musically, of 2020 — and it’s no surprise, because I had these tunes streaming through my speakers all month long! Specifically, I had Gryffin’s Intro, Vandelux’s Don’t Let Go, pretty much everything from Babygirl’s Lovers Fevers EP, Ellie Goulding and Juice WRLD’s Hate Me, Lana Del Ray’s ultra dreamy, stripped down rendition of Sublime’s Doin’ Time, Sol Rising’s Goodnight, Yumi Zouma’s Lonely After, Attom’s Shibui, Jai Wolf’s Lose My Mind (feat. Mr. Gabriel), Aforest’s Higher Ground, PINES’s 1990, Smeyul’s Hang On, DAO’s The View, Frye’s Reasons, GARZA’s Where The Moon Hides, and Janelle Kroll’s STAY on repeat. If you’re looking for an inspiring playlist to help guide you through these strange times, I hope my March 2020 Soundtrack provides some comfort and escape for you. We’re all in this together, just a little f u r t h e r a p a r t !

HONEYED SASKATOON CHERRY GIMLET

After what has undoubtedly been the longest month of my life, I know one thing for sure… I need a stiff drink! Who’s with me?! Each March, I eagerly await Spring Equinox and typically celebrate its arrival with the publication of a fresh, seasonally inspired cocktail — but March 2020’s events really threw my editorial calendar for a loop. Although this recipe is publishing a bit later than I had originally intended, I can assure you it’s been tested to perfection — in fact, there was rarely an evening that passed this month when I didn’t find myself shaking up a Honeyed Saskatoon Cherry Gimlet (if you follow along with my Instagram Stories, you can attest to this!). This cocktail highlights Eau Claire Distillery’s recently re-released Saskatoon Honey Gin — and I’ve teamed up with them give away a full sized bottle (along with a few other goodies!) to one of my Canadian friends to help lift your spirits and keep your home bars stocked!

Gin lovers, I’m thrilled to share my Honeyed Saskatoon Cherry Gimlet recipe with you today — a refreshingly spirited, 4 ingredient spring cocktail inspired by doing the best you can with what you have, where you are. The best part? If you have a well-stocked bar, you likely already have all of the ingredients on hand (and if not, I’ve included links to where you can purchase them to help support local businesses during this challenging time)! This simple but perfectly balanced craft cocktail combines Saskatoon Honey Gin with Honey Simple Syrup, cherry bitters and freshly squeezed lime juice shaken over ice — and can be prepared with ease by home bar beginners and skilled mixologists alike. Bring the cocktail bar to the comfort of your own home this spring with my Honeyed Saskatoon Cherry Gimlet — a quintessentially Albertan twist on a classic gin cocktail! Cheers, friends — and best of luck to those entering the giveaway!

28 PLANT BASED RECIPES MADE WITH PANTRY STAPLES, FROZEN FOOD AND STURDY PRODUCE

Happy Saturday, friends. How’s everyone doing? These are certainly strange and uncertain times. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine blogging about this topic, under these circumstances! But like many of you, I’ve been reflecting on how I can best serve my community in this time of need — and its been so heartening reading stories of individuals and businesses stepping up to care for one another. I’ve always taken great comfort in preparing nourishing meals for myself, my family and my friends — and that extends to all of you! In light of recent world events and the different realities we’re all currently facing in this unprecedented situation, this week I focused on what I could do here at JustineCelina to help. As we spend more time in our homes over the next few weeks (or months) and adapt to a new normal, we’ll inevitably be cooking and eating more meals at home — something I’m very passionate about. So, I rescheduled the pretty cocktail I had originally slated to publish on Spring Equinox (which is now live!) to bring you 28 Plant Based Recipes Made With Pantry Staples, Frozen Food and Sturdy Produce — the ultimate resource in feeding yourself and your family well, and economically, during this challenging time.

I’ve scoured my virtual recipe box to compile 28 extensively tested, plant-based, inexpensive, easy to prepare, immune boosting recipes from breakfast through dinner (with snacks in-between!). Each of these recipes are free of dairy, gluten and refined sugar, but many also yield large batches — which are perfect for families, meal prep or freezing to ensure you have nutrient dense meal options on hand. I’ve always been one to keep a well-stocked kitchen — the majority of my recipes focus on inexpensive but versatile, plant based, pantry, freezer and fridge staples that pack a nutritional punch. I’ve also sprinkled this mega-post with ingredient substitution ideas and tips for maximizing the life of your produce, so you can make the most of what you have on hand (this is actually how my most inventive recipes are conceived, food never goes to waste in my kitchen!). We’re all in this together — so if you’re craving some time in the kitchen cooking, baking and recipe making, I’ve got you covered!

COLOUR CRUSH | CLASSIC BLUE

Colour lovers, today I’m thrilled to bring you a fresh post in my COLOUR CRUSH series dedicated to the Pantone 2020 Colour of the Year, Classic Blue! Selected by Pantone in late 2019 for its ability to ‘instil calm, confidence, and connection, this enduring blue hue highlights our desire for a dependable and stable foundation on which to build as we cross the threshold into a new era’, it seems especially fitting given the current state of the world. I first introduced you to Classic Blue with January’s Digital Blooms (be sure to hop over to download a free, floral, Pantone 2020 inspired tech wallpaper!) and have been working with this comforting, of-the-moment hue across categories since. That said, although blue has always had a small place in my wardrobe (albeit mostly in denim and more formal attire), as someone with warm colouring, it isn’t a hue I’m typically drawn to. Longtime readers will know that each year I allow Pantone’s selections to inspire and challenge me here at JustineCelina — incorporating the Colour of the Year into my life and content in a way that’s congruent to my personal style. Fast forward to March and I’m absolutely crazy about Classic Blue — and today I’m sharing the inspiration with you!

In the midst of another Winter Storm Warning here in Calgary (and after a particularly heavy week in regards to recent news), I thought this weekend was the perfect time to put the finishing touches on a post I’ve been working on since February. As the way we live continues to change over the coming months, I want JustineCelina to remain a source of inspiration and joy for anyone who needs it — including myself! This instalment of my COLOUR CRUSH series is dedicated to Classic Blue transitional styling, starring one of my favourite casual winter-to-spring outfit formulas, perfect for chilly weather. As always, I’m wearing a melange of high, low, old and new in todays look — a mash up of of transitional wardrobe staples intermixed with trend-forward accessories to create an easy-going late winter outfit that’s quintessentially 2020. If you’re curious about Pantone’s 2020 Colour of the Year how to integrate Classic Blue into your wardrobe as we transition into spring, fix yourself a mug of your favourite tea and settle in for an uplifting Sunday read!
