WINTER 2017 SHOE GUIDE | EXTRAS

Hey shoe lovers — welcome back for the second installment in my 2 part Winter 2017 Shoe Guide mini series dedicated to stylish, cold weather footwear! If you caught the first installment where I shared my favourite winter shoe basics, you’ll know that I’ve gone through a major shoe purge and refresh this season. In rebuilding my cold weather footwear wardrobe, I started with basics first — then I branched out the extras (you know, the fun stuff!). In today’s Winter 2017 Shoe Guide | Extras I’m chatting about 5 pairs of versatile statement shoes that add a unique edge to my outfits.

I’ve always been a fan of statement shoes (but you already know this!) and am a sucker for footwear featuring unique details, textures, colours and prints for its ability to completely elevate a simple outfit to something much more interesting and polished. If you have your basic winter footwear sorted and are looking for some offbeat or elevated options, or simply wanting to inject some extra style into your wardrobe as we transition for winter to spring, I’ve totally got you covered. Kick back with me tonight and learn more about my favourite affordable (most are on end-of-season clearance!) statement shoes — plus how to style them!

MILITARY INSPIRED

What better time to photograph a style post than during a heavy snowfall / extreme cold warning when you’re snowed in in the country… right?! I headed east to my childhood home in rural Alberta this past weekend and took the snowstorm as a perfect opportunity to shoot this Military Inspired look in the crisp white serenity of the prairies. It was a bit chilly, but these photos made it all worthwhile!

While the most of the world is gearing up for spring, arctic Canadian weather is still alive and well here in Alberta and February can often be our coldest month. As such, I’m a big fan of the statement coat — especially during the winter when your outerwear is your outfit. While I’ve always loved Military Inspired styles (this jacket is about 6 years old!) I was thrilled to see a resurgence of the military trend this winter — and today I’m showing you how to wear it! I’ve paired a classic Military Inspired statement coat with luxe winter accessories in a few of my favourite cold weather textures including faux fur and velvet. I truly believe a well constructed, Military Inspired coat is a timeless piece and a fantastic addition to dress up any winter wardrobe!

NEW YEAR, NEW GOALS: CULTIVATING A BALANCED 2017

So we’re half way into the first month of a fresh new year — how’s everyone doing? Did you set new goals, intentions and resolutions for 2017, or are you not really into that whole thing? Each year, I take the beginning of January as an opportunity to reflect on the year prior and evaluate how I can continue to grow and better myself in the upcoming year (if you’ve been with me since last year, you may remember my New Year, New Goals: Planning for a Successful 2016 post). I truly embrace the inherent fresh start that a new year provides and while I make it a priority to check in with myself often, a major overhaul was needed this year! I think the start of a new year is just as good a time as any to reflect, evaluate and set fresh intentions.

Today I’m sharing 5 goals and plans I’ve created for myself with then intention of cultivating more balance in my life in 2017 (and beyond!), plus what I’ve already done to work towards them. I’m also sharing some of my favourite planning, scheduling and creative tools to help me maximize my time, get organized, grow creatively and stay inspired! If you’re still in 2017 planning mode or want to learn more about my goals and plans for 2017 (and there are some big ones!), pour yourself a cup of coffee and get comfy — let’s get ready to make 2017 our best year yet! UPDATE: Check in on my progress 7 months later!

CURRIED WINTER VEGETABLES WITH ROASTED ACORN SQUASH (+ MY 200th BLOG POST!)

Today’s recipe marks a milestone in my blogging career. Today I’ve published 200 blog posts. 200 blog posts?! It’s crazy to think I’ve been blogging for 1 year and 9 months (what?), but I guess that’s what 2 posts per week amounts to! It just so happens that my very first post was a recipe, as was my 100th blog post. So if you’re interested in taking a look through my archives, enjoy, but be warned — when I first started JustineCelina I took all my photos in square format on my iPhone!

Anyway, onto the real reason why you’re here today — the recipe! To be honest, I can’t believe this is the first curry recipe I’ve published. I make curries often, typically with whatever veggies and spices we have kicking around (you know how it goes around here!). In the winter especially, plant based curries are a staple in our kitchen — and my Curried Winter Vegetables with Roasted Acorn Squash is healthy comfort food at it’s finest! A medley of onions, garlic and ginger are caramelized, then accompanied by a flavourful trio of carrots, peppers and celery simmered in a decadent, tomato based curry sauce dancing with rich Indian spices and just the right amount of heat. Roasted Acorn Squash houses the Curried Winter Vegetables in a nourishing, edible bowl — a playful, hearty spin on typical bread-based options. This recipe yields a generous amount of curry that freezes well, so you can stock the freezer with healthy options to help fuel January’s resolutions when you’re running short on time!

TRANSITIONING THE TRENDS | AUTUMN TO WINTER

With the weather in Calgary being all sorts of unpredictable this year, I had originally planned to share this look with you earlier this autumn as the last installment in my Autumn Trend Guides. The intense cold snap we experienced a couple of weeks ago made shooting new style content outside almost impossible — but thankfully we experienced a few above 0℃ days earlier this week, so I jumped at the chance to get out there and snap a few photos. It actually worked out perfectly, since this last Trend Guide is all about transitioning some of autumns biggest trends into winter!

Today I’m sharing 10 of my favourite styles that are here to stay as temperatures drop — we’re talking novelty denim, metallics, block heels, mini bags, faux fur, pompoms, cold shoulders, velvet, longline and ultra dark, oversized shades! I’m also officially introducing you to Pantone’s Colour of the Year for 2017, Greenery, and chatting about different ways to incorporate it into your personal style this season. If you’re ready to refresh your wardrobe for 2017 (or are looking for some holiday style inspiration), these are my top recommendations for trends that are here to stay!

NOVEMBER BEAUTY FAVOURITES

Hey beautiful people — welcome back for the November installment of my Monthly Beauty Favourites! November was a very experimental month for me beauty wise and I discovered some amazing new products that have become staples in my everyday routine. Liquid lipsticks have become my go-to anytime I need something extremely long wearing and budgeproof — and I fell in love with two warm, mid toned neutral shades this month from Smashbox and Huda Beauty. I also discovered a fantastic new contour powder and mascara that have been on repeat all month long!

In November I had my first introduction to Anastasia Beverly Hills eyeshadows (I think everyone should own the palette I’m about to mention!) and to Commodity‘s beautiful, cozy fragrances. To cap things off, I also have a few limited edition favourites for Holiday 2016, including a gorgeous palette from Hourglass Cosmetics and a rose quartz Pantone Colour of the Year themed highlighter (I bet you saw that one coming!). If you’re looking to inject some glam into your routine as we transition into the holidays, kick back with me on this snowy Sunday afternoon and let’s chat beauty!
