Welcome back, flower friends! Spring has finally sprung here in Calgary — and Rebecca Dawn Design and I are celebrating with another fresh, seasonally inspired edition of DIGITAL BLOOMS! This month, we focused on flowers, herbs and branches that have a wild, hand picked feeling inspired by the new growth of spring — including Pussy Willows, Delphinium, Acacia, Yellow Button and White Matricaria, Pom Pom Chrysanthemums and Lavender arranged with a sense of whimsy. We hope you enjoy May’s cheerful, free spirited designs as much as we enjoyed creating them!
Embrace this season’s fresh combination of soft pastels and brights on your tech with 3 free digital downloads! This May, we’ve focused primarily on Meadowlark, Little Boy Blue, Blooming Dahlia and Coconut Milk from the Pantone Spring 2018 Colour Trend Report. I love pairing crisp whites up with blue and yellow at this time of year — with a touch of blush throw into the mix, it’s such a happy and vibrant palette! Why not extend your spring cleaning to your computer, tablet and phone this year and reward yourself with a beautiful floral wallpaper when you’re finished? Thank you for joining us for another month of DIGITAL BLOOMS — wishing you all a joyful, inspired and productive month!
I’m spending Good Friday catching up on some editorial content — and I don’t mind one bit! It’s snowing (again… cue eye roll!) here in Calgary so I’m quite content to be curled up at my desk in a cozy pair of sweatpants and fuzzy socks with my second cup of coffee. Spring has definitely been holding out on us this year — and while most of the world (and the fashion industry) is in full on spring mode, I always dress for our current Alberta climate. Today I’m thrilled to introduce a new series to the JustineCelina FASHION department called PATTERN PLAY — where I dedicate an entire post to a specific pattern — along with tons of styling ideas, curated pieces with shoppable links at every price point and tips for selecting the right print for your lifestyle and body type. And we’re kicking things off with one of my favourite classic prints, leopard! I’m also taking this snow covered opportunity to get the last of cold weather textures in — including (faux) leather, satin and wool. Hey — I’m a glass half full kinda gal!
Regardless of whether you’re a leopard lover or never thought leopard was for you, there’s something for everyone in today’s post! I’m chatting about how you can incorporate leopard print into your wardrobe right now as well as transition it into spring (and style it with 2 of my favourite spring prints, stripes and florals!). I’ve always considered leopard print a neutral (when you break it down, it’s just shades of brown and black) — and while it’s more popular some seasons than others, this iconic pattern truly never goes out of style. In fact, I’ve owned my oldest leopard piece for about 8 years! Of course, there are some of the usual suspects in today’s look as well — including baker boy hats (but don’t worry — I finally trimmed my fringe this week so I’ll be sharing some new style content next month where I’m not wearing a hat!), longline coats, OTK boots and a beautiful, neutral lip — but I’ve also integrated some fun, playful textures in this monochromatic, leopard-centric outfit.
SPRING EQUINOX KIWI ELDERFLOWER SMASH
Happy first weekend of spring, friends! Wow — what a crazy, whirlwind week this has been. Between publishing our Living Room Reveal on Monday, my Style Me Pretty Living feature on Wednesday (pinch me!), a very exciting FASHION announcement (which has now published!), to a jam packed calendar full of events and meetings, plus 8 rounds of testing for this recipe (and subsequent cocktail ingredient runs before noon!), I’m finally getting a fresh cocktail for you this weekend. Initially this recipe was supposed to publish on Wednesday to welcome the first day of spring, so let’s just say my Spring Equinox Kiwi Elderflower Smash is fashionably late (like our spring weather) — but she comes bearing gifts! I’ve teamed up with Eau Claire Distillery once again to give away a full sized bottle of Prickly Pear EquineOx to one of you lovely Canadians (check out the bottom of the post for details on how to enter!).
After a long, snow covered winter, I’m elated to unleash my Spring Equinox Kiwi Elderflower Smash — a post-hibernation celebration of spring’s refreshing flavours in cocktail form! I figured it was time to pump the brakes on the gin train (let’s be real… there’s been a ton of gin drinking going down here at JustineCelina!) and introduce you to a completely unique spirit to welcome spring’s arrival. Today I’m working with Eau Claire Distillery’s award winning Prickly Pear EquineOx — a sweet, lightly citrusy, barley based vodka incorporating Alberta’s Prickly Pear Cactus with a special blend of spring botanicals. Complimented by a refreshing bouquet of elderflower, kiwi, lime, a kiss of wine, a dash of bitters and a splash of soda, I’ve created a seasonal elixir that pairs perfectly with longer evenings and balmier weather. I’ve also teamed up with 4 talented food bloggers across North America to bring you the Spring 2018 Edition of Connecting Over Cocktails! If you’re looking for some inspired cocktail ideas as we transition into spring, we’re totally got you covered — stay tuned to see what my fellow Food Bloggers of Canada are mixing up for you this weekend!
WINTER 2018 TREND GUIDE | VELVET UNDERGROUND
March is upon us, but winter is still very much alive and well here in Alberta. In fact, in all my years living in Calgary, I can’t remember a winter when we’ve had this much snow (I’m not even exaggerating, the piles are taller than I am!). So, what’s a fashionista to do? This year, I resolved not to let old man winter put a damper on my personal style — after all, life must go on and I’m a firm believer in looking and feeling your best, no matter the weather. So, for my final TREND GUIDE of the season, I’m sharing a cozy look featuring some of my favourite luxe, winter fabrics — but I’m also taking cues from SS18 trend forecasts. This transitional, winter-meets-spring look is two parts new and one part vintage — with a dash of bad ass thrown in for good measure (and yes, I listened to The Velvet Underground the entire time I edited this post!).
If you’re ready to rev up some classic pieces in your winter wardrobe with an infusion of key spring trends, this post is for you! Today I’m chatting about velvet, baker boy hats, millennial pink, daytime sequins, fuzzy fabrics and gold accessories — plus how you can wear these trends right now, as well as transition them into spring. Don’t let the March blah’s get you down — let’s end winter with a bang this season with my WINTER 2018 TREND GUIDE | VELVET UNDERGROUND and tons of shoppable links at every price point!
Rebecca Dawn Design and I are back today with a fresh installment in our ALL ABOUT series, where we team up to educate you on an of the moment seasonal flower — and this winter, it’s All About Anemones! We’ve already covered Tulips, Roses and Peonies in this series, but we’ve never featured a winter flower — and Anemones happen to be a personal favourite of ours. If this unique looking bloom seems familiar, it’s because we’ve worked with them many times here at JustineCelina — and in many different colours. Today we’re featuring these stunning, ethereal Panda Anemones (my all time favourite) and dropping some serious FLOWER EDUCATION on you!
If you’re looking to purchase some cheerful, cold weather blooms to brighten up what has quite possibly been the longest winter in history, consider this All About Anemones post your one-stop shop when it comes to this season’s most coveted flower. Today we’re sharing alternate names and meanings, colours and varieties available, vase life, what to look for when purchasing, as well as how to care for and condition your Anemones so you can enjoy them for up to 8 days. Rebecca also shares her insider tips about when to purchase Anemones! If you’d like to learn more about these delicate, unique winter blooms or simply stopped by to brush up on winter flower care, come on in!
ROSE INFUSED CHERRY GIN FIZZ
Remember the summer I acquired a taste for gin? It’s since become my favourite spirit. In fact, around this time last year I even ventured to Vancouver Island to track down an infamous local gin unavailable in Alberta (I also made a cocktail with that one!). Although the gin I brought home from my coastal travels is long gone, late last year I stumbled on Eau Claire Distillery via Instagram (their bottles are gorgeous and totally drew me in!). Imagine my surprise to find out we have an incredible, award winning distillery less than an hour from home! Over the holidays I took a trip to the visit their distillery in Turner Valley with my Mom (who loves gin) and my brother (who was home from New York and loves cocktails) for a tour and tasting — and we were all completely blown away by the quality of Eau Claire’s hand crafted offerings and their farm to glass approach. Now that I know they exist (and they’re local!) I actually can’t fathom using anything else in my cocktails! Over the last couple of months, we’ve padded our bar with several of Eau Claire’s artisinal spirits — including their most recent offering, Cherry Gin.
In honour of love day, I’m so excited to share my Rose Infused Cherry Gin Fizz! This feminine, fruity and lightly floral cocktail combines Eau Claire’s stunning Cherry Gin with my favourite Prosecco, a splash of fresh lemon juice and a Rose & Pink Peppercorn Infused Honey Simple Syrup for a contemporary spin on the classic French 75. My Rose Infused Cherry Gin Fizz is a beautiful addition to your Valentine’s Day menu, but can be enjoyed anytime you want to indulge in a gourmet craft cocktail at home! As always, it’s free of dairy, gluten and refined sugar — and bursting with fruity flavours, floral undertones, unique botanicals and a refreshing effervescence. The best part? Eau Claire is helping me share the love this Valentine’s Day by giving away a Cherry Gin Cocktail Caddy valued at $99 to one of my Canadian friends — check out the bottom of the post for details on how to enter!
